Fear of Public Speaking
The fear of public speaking is called glossophobia (or, informally, "stage fright") is believed to be the most common type of human phobia.

Fear of speaking in public affects as much as three quarters of the population and is ranked even above the fear of death. As Jerry Seinfeld has said, "The average person at a funeral would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy."

Many careers require some ability in public speaking, for example presenting information to clients or colleagues, or it may be something as simple as a speech at a family gathering.

It's A Crazy Notion
When you think about the fear of public speaking, it really is a crazy notion. All through our lives we speak thousands of words every day, to our friends and family, to complete strangers, we even talk to ourselves and it does not cause us any concern at all. In fact if you think about it, we are already experts speakers, the only thing we have to come to terms with is the scale of our audience.

Are You Scared Of Driving In The  Traffic?
If we look at public speaking and compare it to something else we do on almost as often, take driving your car for example. The fear we demonstrate of public speaking would be exactly the same as if we were scared of driving our cars in traffic, and would only consider driving ourselves about when there were few or no other cars are on the road.

Yet this is exactly what we do when the time comes to present a formal speech, whether it’s a wedding speech as a best man, perhaps an acceptance speech or a speech given at retirement. Any thought of speaking in public, in fact any speech in front of an audience at all and the panic soon sets in.

The I.Q. of a Foot Stool
Our IQ’s seem to drop to that of a foot stool and our confidence flees for the nearest Exit. Is it because we are afraid that we will make fools of ourselves, the truth of the matter is most audiences want the person making the speech to succeed, to do well. The reason for this unspoken support is that the vast majority of the people in your audience know exactly how hard making a speech can be, not to mention how glad they are that it is you up there at the rostrum or holding the microphone and not them.

Public speaking can be one of the most rewarding (and profitable) skills that any of us can master - you may even find that you enjoy it. I think we all agree that being able to handle ourselves we in a public speaking situation or any speaking opportunity would have a very positive effect on our lives, our careers and our confidence.

Public speaking is considered to be one of the most important and valued skills that you can possess. Being able to speak well in public can help to engage and move an audience for whatever purpose you choose.

Language and Rhetoric
Use are among two of the most important aspects of public speaking and interpersonal communication. Having a good knowledge and understanding of the use and purpose of communication can help to make you a more effective speaker and communicate your message in a more effective and charismatic way.

Once you have learned to speak well in public it will be a skill that matures and grows with you all your life. No one will be able to take it away from you in a court room or a divorce settlement. How will you feel, to be able to get up at work or in your church and volunteer to make a speech. It is possible, and you can to it too if your want to.
