Obesity Research - What Drives The Effort By Carlo Morelli, Thu Dec 8th
Obesity increases a person's risk for gallstone formation, highblood pressure and diabetes, as well as cancers of the breast, endometrium, colon, kidney, and oesophagus. These are some ofthe reasons why world health officials are putting more moneyinto research and making sure that they get theinformation that they need to provide us with new ways to battlethe new worldwide epidemic that is evolving. research iscrucial in telling us what the root causes of are andhow we can tackle it. Current and past medical research has shown us that obesityisn't entirely due to unhealthy living; it is also influenced byour DNA. People who have had members of their family that havesuffered from being overweight or obese will be at a high risklevel of suffering the same problems and therefore need to takeextra steps to help prevent that from happening. Although genetics play a part in
obesity, research and commonsense strongly suggest that unhealthy living- overeating andinsufficient exercise - also plays a major part when it comes toobesity. To burn fat we need to burn more than we take in. If wedo not exercise then we don't burn fat, therefore inevitably wewill end up first overweight, then obese. (You are considered tobe obese if you are more than 20 percent over your idealweight.) Research helps us to know more about the complexitiesof obesity. Yet, there is so much more for researchers toexplore, more time and investment needs to put be into obesityresearch so we can find more conclusive solutions to battlingobesity.
The fact is, even though is on its way to becoming theleading cause of preventable death in the U.S., AIDS, anothercause of preventable death, receives about 5 times more researchfunding than obesity. Obesity causes major health problems and researches have madenote that unless the situation is addressed we may face a majorworldwide problem due to obesity. It is a major complication interms of operations as many doctors and consultants will notanaesthetize any one who is grossly overweight as this isextremely unsafe. More important medical problems can't besolved or helped when is a problem. Continued research is important. In addition, theinformation we do have needs to be better disseminated - far tomany people are grappling with the problem of being overweightand loosing the struggle and turning obese. Research findingsshould be made available in the form of books, televisionadverts, leaflets and school topics. An estimated 127 millionadults in the United States alone are overweight or obese.Surely we can do better.
