Natural Ways To Relieve Migraine Pain
By Michael Byrd
"My head is killing me." This is not just a made up way of shrugging off responsibility. More than twenty five million Americans are plagued with headaches. And it’s no laughing matter. But there are natural remedies that can provide both quick and long standing relief.

Migraine discomforts can last anywhere between six and forty-eight hours and may totally disable the unlucky sufferer. There are many different symptoms, but they frequently include intense pounding pain, usually on just one side of the head.

No one knows exactly what causes headaches, but recent published research is pointing to inflammation as a major factor. This inflammation can be caused by tension and the resulting stress, alcohol, chocolate, hormones (particularly when a woman is ovulating or menstruating),food additives like MSG and even presc3ription meds like birth controls pills.

Migraines are generally grouped as either classic or common. About eighty percent fall into the common classification category without an aura. These headaches are generally much less painful than the classic classification with auras. An aura is a disturbance in a person's eyes, usually something like flashing lights or seeing spots, shapes or patterns. Nausea and vomiting can sometimes also accompany an aura.

Ocular headaches are often confused with classic migraines. Even though the aura may be close to the same, it only happens in one eye. If the sufferer goes on to get a headache, the pain is usually less intensive. Thankfully, the aura does no damage to the eyes and usually doesn't last very long. You will find that ocular migraines will impede driving and reading.

Sufferers may find comfort in a cool, dark room with a cold compress applied to the painful area. Most headaches will go away after a rest period of six to twelve hours.

After the headache has worked its way through your system, you should put some thought into a personal headache

prevention program. Making easy lifestyle changes can often permanently eliminate headaches. Get started by reducing anxiety and worry. This can take some work, but less stress will be worth the effort.

What can you do right now? You can get started on a simple fitness program and start eating a healthier diet. Avoid any food that might trigger headache symptoms. These foods can include caffeine, any type of chocolate, refined sugar, soda, acoholic beverages, white flour and rice and any type of cake. These foods can be addictive, so you may have to wean yourself off of them gradually.

You can actually learn to enjoy eating a whole food diet with lots of nutritious vegetables, whole grains, fresh fruit, lean protein and pure water. And, in order to eliminate the inflammation and related pain and discomfort from the migraines, start taking a high quality omega 3 supplement.

Fortunately, most headache sufferers, even those who’ve been suffering from them for many years, find they can prevent headaches naturally by making these simple lifestyle changes. And, oh what a relief - to be headache free!
