"Suspension - A sculptured form or construction which appears to be suspended in space." Floral Art Show Guide, Part 1 Western style designs, RHS of NSW Inc.
There was no restriction on the shape or form of this entry, however it had to be hung on a supplied hook attached to a rod 1.8m high. The space allowed was 60cm wide.
My arrangement is attached to the hook by a double length of fishing line sewn through the top of the green bamboo cross that forms the basis of the arrangement. As the plant material is out of water I need to use long lasting flowers so that I don't lose any points in the marking of the entry.
The flowers are Singapore orchids, kangaroo paw and strelitzia - good, colorful, showy flowers in similar color tones. The backing is strelitzia leaves and flax folded and twisted to "wrap" the flowers onto the bamboo supports.
To construct the arrangement, I made two bunches of the greenery and flowers, placed them end to end (the stalk ends side by side)and taped them together. This now single arrangement was tied to the bamboo so that one arrangement appears upright and the other is upside down. The tape and join were then covered with a wide gold glitter ribbon and bow.
