Eczema is a Form of Dermatitis
Defined as an inflammation of the upper layers of the skin.

The term eczema is broadly applied to a range of persistent skin conditions that include dryness and recurring skin rashes with a variety of symptoms from redness of the skin accompanied by itching and dryness.

The skin of the eczema sufferer can exihibit crusting and flaking of the affected areas as well as blistering, cracking or even bleeding in more severe cases.

People Who Suffer from Eczema
Or dermatitis are often embarrassed by their condition and his is something I wholeheartedly sympathise with.. I know when I was school aged, I suffered a degree of ridicule and torment from classmates resulting from the nasty appearance of my hands during times when my eczema was at its worst.

Eczema is Described As
Eczema is often described in three main ways. Firstly by location of the eczema problem for example Hand Eczema (which I suffer from), secondly by specific appearance (eczema craquele or discoid), and lastly by possible cause (varicose eczema).

Further adding to the confusion, many sources use the term eczema and the term for the most common type of eczema (atopic eczema) interchangeably.

Common Types of Eczema
Contact dermatitis, there are two types, Allergic Dermatitis which results from a delayed reaction to an allergen, such as poison ivy or often nickel, and Irritant Dermatitis which results from direct reaction to a solvent or similar product.

Some substances act both as allergen and irritant (wet cement is one cuprite). Other substances may cause a problem after sunlight exposure, bringing on Phototoxic Dermatitis.

About three quarters of cases of contact eczema are of the irritant type, which is the most common occupational skin disease. Contact eczema is curable provided the offending substance can be avoided, and all traces of the substance removed from your environment.

Xerotic Eczema
Is dry skin that becomes so serious it turns into eczema. This type of eczema is also often called asteatotic, craquele, craquelatum, winter itch, pruritus or hiemalis. It worsens in dry winter weather, and limbs and trunk are most often affected.

The itchy, tender skin resembles a dry, cracked, river bed. This disorder is very common among the older population.

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
Causes dry or greasy scaling of the scalp and eyebrows and is often called cradle cap in infants or dandruff to the rest of us. In newborns Seborrhoeic Dermatitis causes a thick, yellow crusty scalp rash known as Cradle Cap and is related (so it seems) to lack of biotin. Cradle Cap is usually curable.

Less Common Types of Eczemas

Dyshidrosis Eczemas
Also called Dyshidrotic Eczemas, pompholyx, vesicular palmoplantar dermatitis or even housewife’s eczema. This type of Eczemas only occurs on palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and along the sides of the fingers and toes.

Tiny opaque bumps called vesicles are accompanied by itching which gets worse at night. This type of hand eczema is often worse in warmer weather.

Discoid Eczema
Also know as Nummular Eczema., Exudative Eczema or Microbial Eczema. It is characterized by round oozing spots or a dry rash that has clear defined boundaries. It often appears on the lower legs and is usually worse in the winter. The cause of Discoid Eczema is unknown at the time of writing and this condition tends to come and go without warning.

Venous Eczema
Commonly called Gravitational Eczema, Stasis Dermatitis or Varicose Eczema. Venous Eczema occurs in people with impaired circulation. Conditions like varicose veins can bring about Venous Eczema and it is particularly common in the ankle area of people especially in the over 50’s age group. Symptoms include is redness, scaling, darkening of the skin and of course the ever present itching. The disorder can often predispose itself to leg ulcers.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Also called Duhring’s Disease causes intensely itchy and typically symmetrical rash on arms, thighs, knees, and back. It is directly related to celiac disease and can often be put into remission with appropriate diet.

Neurodermatitis
Commonly called Lichen Simplex Chronicus or Localized Scratch Dermatitis is an itchy area of thickened skin pigmented by eczema that results from habitual rubbing and scratching. Usually there is only one spot. Neurodermatitis is often curable through behavior modification and anti-inflammatory medication.

Autoeczematization
That is Reaction  Autosensitization is an eczematous reaction to an infection with parasites, fungus, bacteria or a virus. It is completely curable with the clearance of the original infection that caused it. The appearance varies depending on the cause. It always occurs some distance away from the original infection.

There are also eczemas overlaid by viral infections (Herpeticum and Vaccinatum), and eczemas resulting from underlying disease like Lymphoma.

One common symptom to all these types of Eczema and Dermatitis is the itching that cannot be understood by anyone who has not suffered from any of these conditions. I know I have scratched and rubbed at my eczema affected hands until they have bled.

Because the itch is often worse at night it is difficult not to resist the urge to scratch while sleeping which starts a cycle of worsening that can be difficult to halt.

Steroid Based Ointments
Recently I have tried to stay away from steroid based ointments and creams instead using a variety of other less potent solutions some based around tar and similar natural products including oat based bath products that I have found are quite effective.

I still find I need to resort to the Big Guns of a steroid on occasions but like many things I find the less I use a steroid based solution the better they work, less is more in this case.

In this awareness guide I have complied a series of reports and articles that I hope you find useful. I know what a problem eczema and dermatitis can be and wish you all the best in your finding information leading to a workable solution for you too.

And again, thank you to those contributing daily to our eczema website.
