Depression is one of the most misunderstood medical conditions of our time. Many people who suffer from depression are unaware that it is a medical condition just like any other.

Many things can start depression. The feelings associated with depression are caused by chemical changes in the brain that affects how it functions.

Because our brains are so complex it is not surprising that small chemical changes that occur in our brain can have dramatic and devastating effects on the way we feel.

In a normally functioning brain, billions of tiny cells called Neurons communicate with one another by means of special chemicals called neurotransmitters. When the balance of these neurotransmitters is altered or impaired the signals passing from one brain cell to another can be impaired.

This can lead to the medical condition we refer to a Depression.

Depression is not a weakness anymore than arthritis or heart disease can be considered a weakness. It is purely a medical condition that once understood can be treated by many means including a range of medications that help restore normal chemical function. Some people who suffer from depression say it feels like a black curtain of gloom coming down over their lives. Symptoms can often include lethargy and an inability to concentrate.

Sometimes it will take the form of leaving the sufferer felling irritable all the time for no apparent reason.

The symptoms vary from person to person, but if you feel "low" for more than a couple of weeks and you feel that these feelings are disturbing your daily life, you may be clinically depressed.

Depression unlike many illnesses cannot have an immunity built up against it. Many people who have experienced depression will often go through it again.

You may feel some of the symptoms of depression weeks before you develop full blown depression. Learning to know these early warnings and working with your doctor will help to keep the depression from taking hold.

Most people will respond to treatment and treating depression is especially important because it affects you and those around you, your family, your friends and your work. In extreme cases of depression some people will try to harm themselves in the mistaken belief that the feeling of depression will go on forever, this is not the case. Depression is a treatable illness.

You may have to try a range of different medications to find the one that works best for you. You may benefit from seeing a therapist and possibly make certain changes to your lifestyle to help overcome and prevent depression from reoccurring.

Change will not happen overnight, though with the correct treatment, will overcome depression and stop it from consuming your life.
