Is
Alcohol Hurting Your Life?
Is
your life or the life of someone you love
being torn apart as a result of alcohol abuse? Alcohols
effects can be devastating to both the person suffering the problem as
well as friends
and
family.
Alcohols
cost to us as a society is
difficult to measure, sure there are the direct costs, loss of
productivity and
accidents caused while under it influence. Though the most insidious
price is
the loss of opportunity that it creates, and the damaging effect it has
on
human lives.
The extent
of alcoholism
and addiction in
the world is horrific. Substance abuse is one of the major health
problems we
face today. Over a lifetime, 27% of the population will suffer from a
substance
abuse disorder, 25% of Americans will die of some form of substance
abuse. Over
90% of alcoholics die of their disease, approximately 26 years earlier
than
their normal life expectancy.
More
than
40%
of those who start drinking
at age 14 (or younger) are likely to become alcoholics. In 1998 alone,
the cost
of alcohol abuse was over 185 billion dollars. Many years of alcohol
and drug
use studies find that 80% of high school seniors
have tried alcohol and
32%
have gotten drunk in the last thirty days.
Heart
Disease, Cancer & Stroke
Heavy
drinking contributes to illnesses in
each of the top three causes of death: heart disease, cancer and
stroke.
Yet,
even now in many sections of our community alcoholism and substance
abuse are
still frowned upon. People suffering from these terrible afflictions
are seen
as failures, someone of dubious character. Truth is most of these
people are no
different from you or me.
Alcohol
is
an Insidious Drug
It
can can lure you in little by little. Its effects help us feel better,
often happier
more
confident while
all the while a dependence can start to
take hold.
There
is no alcoholic born who did not at
some stage think that they could control their drinking habit.
“I can
stop any
time I want to”,
it is just that time never seems to arrive. “I will
quit
tomorrow”...
It
is only
when the human cost starts to
mount up, and the realisation (for some) starts to set in that this
drinking
problem is now in control of their lives and hurting them an those
people
they love around them.
Light
at the End of thr Tunnel
Classical
alcoholism takes about 15 years
to develop, but it can happen much quicker in adolescents and young
adults.
With all of this bad news though there is light at the end of the
tunnel, we
have strong evidence that treatment of alcoholism does work.
We
have to
remember there problem of
alcoholism is a physical one, not so much different from any of us who
may
suffer from multiple sclerosis or diabetes. It can be controlled and
its damage
can be reversed.
For
every
dollar spent on alcohol and drug
recovery programs, the economy saves seven dollars in health care and
other
related costs to society. Most patients who work with the recovery
programs
stay clean and stay sober.
