too. A good friend of mine says cats don’t really have owners, they
have staff. And any of you lucky enough to have a feline companion of
your own will understand that statement 100%.
The domestic cat or house cat
(Felis catus), is distinct from other felines in the cat family. They
are usually small carnivores and like all cats belong to a group of
creatures known as the crepuscular group.
Crepuscular mammals
like all cats are most active at dawn and dusk as opposed to nocturnal
(night active) or diurnal (day active) creatures.
Cats have been
valued by man since about 8000BC, both for their companionship and
their ability to hunt vermin, often including snakes and scorpions.
Not
only a skilled predator, the cat is known to hunt over 1,000 species
of animals insects and birds for food.  |
Cats are also very clever and
can be trained to obey simple commands with certain individual cats
being known to learn on their own to manipulate simple mechanisms, such
as doorknobs etcetera.
Cats Use a Variety of Sounds
Or vocalizations as well as body language for communication. These include
meowing, purring, hissing, growling, squeaking and chirping. With
over 69 million cats at present in homes all over American, cats are
one of the most popular pets in the country. Cats globally may be the
most popular type of pet, with over 640 million in homes all over the
world. |
They are also bred and shown as registered pedigree pets. This hobby is known as the "Cat Fancy".
Until
recently the cat was commonly believed to have been domesticated in
ancient Egypt, where it was a cult animal. However a 2007 study found
that all house cats are probably descended from a group of cats with as
few as five in the genus of self-domesticating African Wildcats (Felis
silvestris lybica circa 8000 BC), in the Near East.
All that
aside, cats make a great companion and are very self reliant so are an
excellent choice for those less mobile of us who would like a pet.
Whether
your choice of feline is a Burmese, Tonkinese or even just a plain old
tabby cat, you will be guaranteed many years of companionship and
pleasure, enjoy and take care of your kitty today.
